This was an interesting article in yesterday's NY Times: <http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/15/science/earth/new-interactive-tool-helps-track-earths-forests.html?ref=science>. They link to a recently developed interactive map tool: <http://earthenginepartners.appspot.com/science-2013-global-forest>. Although in its early stages, the tool has gotten a good bit of praise. There are plans to update the tool yearly with data from NASA's Landstat 8 satellite.
