David,
This is not a direct answer, but if you do not get one I would
consider contacting the people involved with MapAnalyst (
http://mapanalyst.org/index.html
; particularly Bernhard Jenny) and also
Joaquim
Alves Gaspar (http://lisboa.academia.edu/JoaquimGaspar
; can be done via MapHist Forum). You may have already
done this.

I am studying some early nineteenth century maps by Aaron
Arrowsmith that show projection grids (graticules), but do not
state what projection was used. I was wondering if someone has
developed software to ascertain map projections based on the
lines of the grid. I would think that it would be fairly easy
to develop something like this, but have not been able to turn
up anything via Google. Any leads?
