New release of British Library maps online via BL Georeferencer http://maps.bl.uk

Last week, nearly 2,800 maps were posted online and are available for georeferencing. Two collections were included:

British + Irish towns: fire insurance plans - ~2500 maps

The Chas E Goad Ltd fire insurance plans of British and Irish towns and cities provide unique information not found elsewhere about land use, buildings and the urban landscape in the late 19c-e 20thc. These are invaluable for geneaologists and local historians.
Â
Military maps: World War I and US Civil War - ~225 maps
Curator selections for two themes of military mapping: over 100 WWI-era maps include trench maps, campaign charts, and social and ethnographic mapping. Maps related to Britain's role in the American Civil War support that online exhibition http://www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/onlineex/uscivilwar/
