Subject: 2010 Census SF-1 on DVD

Hello,

Last month after attending in the FDLP online session on Government Reference during the Shut Down, I decided to do some exploring to see if there was a DVD Census product available yet. Lo and behold, I found that the Census Bureau has a 2-DVD set available FOR FREE. Information on the 2 DVD set is available at:

http://www.census.gov/mp/www/cat/decennial_census_2010/summary_file_1_1.html

I called the Customer Services Center (1-800-923-8282) to request the two DVD set (Catalog number: V1-D10-S1S1-08-US1). It arrived within a week.

It may have came through the Depository Library Program so some libraries may already have a copy (we did not). After about an hour of trial and error, I managed to get the system to provide data on the population for Illinois counties in one table that includes the Total Population, White, Black, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, Other Two or more Races & Hispanic. I was also able to download the block level data for the entire state (all blocks in the state at once) rather than having to select certain counties (which is what I have to do in American FactFinder).

If your library does not have this DVD yet, I recommend that you try to get it. Linda Zellmer
