An HP DesignJet 1055cm Plus printer in the Library's Student Multimedia Design Center that prints PDF files on a 36" wide roll of matte or glossy paper for $5.00 per linear foot ($2.50 per six inches) is available but isn't used frequently for maps. Many of the people seeking printed maps need to use them in classes. Most of the people I have assisted appear satisfied with the online versions of new or historical maps. A few people have indicated a preference for using printed maps. The largest factor for user satisfaction may be whether the edition (print or online) captures the time period that the user needs. If your library has been heavily weeding your printed topographic maps, do you have a plotter to print maps for patrons who would like a printed copy, and has there been any dissatisfaction expressed by patrons or faculty members about the migration of topographic maps from printed format to online access? Any observations you might care to share would be most welcome. Thanks!
