You have been invited to the event "Creating Interactive Map Indexes – A MAGIRT/WAML Webinar"

Creating Interactive Map Indexes – A MAGIRT/WAML Webinar

Stop consulting photo-copied, hand-colored indexes to discover map holdings. Create an interactive website that shows the maps you own!

This webinar will teach you how to create your own indexes, populate them with holdings information, and mount the indexes on web site to create a dynamic, interactive portal to your collection. Best of all, you can deposit your index templates in a crowd-sourced collection for all to share!
Using ArcGIS and arcgis.com, you will learn how to create a basic index to a paper map set (at least those that follow a regular gridded pattern). Instructions will include how to add and manipulate a “fishnet”, how to populate your index with appropriate information such as sheet number and name, how to share your base map with other people, how to populate your index with your library’s holdings information, and lastly, how to upload your index with your library’s information to make an interactive (you can move around the map), dynamic (searchable) web site with embedded links (to your catalog or scanned copies of the maps).
This webinar will focus on indexes to international map collections. Participants are recommended to have a basic familiarity with GIS.

This webinar is jointly sponsored by the Map and Geospatial Information Round Table (MAGIRT) of the American Library Association and the Western Association of Map Libraries (WAML). For more information about these organizations, see http://www.ala.org/magirt/ and http://www.waml.org/
