If these are the AMS/DMA/.. gazetteers that later went into the GNIS
database online, then you may find no benefit to keeping the paper.

There is enough historic data in the GNIS for older/former names.

I kept our old state topo gazetteers for a long time and finally determined
that the only real loss was browsability of feature names. But this wasn't a
concern of users and the paper version was not used at all after online was
available. I DID keep the New York State gazetteer just in case, but that
was it.

We had some GNIS data on fiche and may still, but I have not had to consult
that in years and the online version is superior.

The Marriott Library is currently discarding or redistributing lots of
decades-old government documents. Among the candidates for withdrawal a
number of older gazetteers published by the "War Department, Army Map
Service, and later by Defense Mapping Agency. I can't say I've used any of
them for a long while, so I'm amenable to their withdrawal, but I thought
I'd check with colleagues on whether there's still a reason to keep them
around. Any comments?
