Subject: Re: Usefulness of old gazetteers?

Hello,

Given the place name changes after the fall of the Soviet Union, I would vote to keep them. That way, if someone is finding information on a place that existed while an area was under Soviet control, they can find them. I am not sure that this older information is in GeoNames.

However, you might want to consider comparing your fiche editions with your print editions. A few months ago, I found a fiche edition that was issued by DMA that was exactly the same as the one issued by the USBGN. The DMA version was fiche and the BGN version was in print. I kept the print.

Subject: Usefulness of old gazetteers?

The Marriott Library is currently discarding or redistributing lots of decades-old government documents.  Among the candidates for withdrawal a number of older gazetteers published by the “War Department, Army Map Service, and later by Defense Mapping Agency. I can’t say I’ve used any of them for a long while, so I’m amenable to their withdrawal, but I thought I’d check with colleagues on whether there’s still a reason to keep them around.  Any comments?
