Google has scanned at least some of them in the Google Book Project.
A fair number of these came to my institution through depository in microform format. Google isn’t scanning microforms at this time, so those gazetteers would only get scanned if Google Book participating institutions happened to get all of their gazetteers in print form.

Like many, I suspect, I have rarely use bound AMS/DMA gazetteers anymore.
However, several of our staff still prefer to use them for place name browsing and coordinate comparisons. In some cases, only the bound gazetteers solves the issue.
Is anyone out there “pdfing” these bound volumes for local use? The information contained in these volumes would still be available for browsing but shelf space would open up. (And would not to rely on geonet)

The Marriott Library is currently discarding or redistributing lots of decades-old government documents. Among the candidates for withdrawal a number of older gazetteers published by the “War Department, Army Map Service, and later by Defense Mapping Agency. I can’t say I’ve used any of them for a long while, so I’m amenable to their withdrawal, but I thought I’d check with colleagues on whether there’s still a reason to keep them around. Any comments?
