WEBINAR: CREATING DYNAMIC ACCESS TO YOUR MAP COLLECTION USING GIS-BASED INDEXES

A live training Webinar, " Creating Dynamic Access to Your Map Collection Using GIS-Based Indexes," will be offered Tuesday, June 24.

Register today for “Creating Dynamic Access to Your Map Collection Using GIS-Based Indexes<http://www.fdlp.gov/component/acymailing/url/subid-1244/urlid-1372/mailid-327?no_html=1>.”

  *   Start Time: 2 p.m. Eastern Time
  *   Duration: 60 minutes
  * Speaker(s): Christopher J.J. Thiry, Map Librarian at Colorado School of Mines
  * Summary: Attendees will learn how, using GIS, to create their own indexes (or use the base indexes created by other librarians), populate those indexes with their library’s holdings information, and mount the indexes on a Web site to create a dynamic, interactive portal to their collection. This webinar will focus on indexes to international map collections. It is recommended that participants have a very basic familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Through the decades, GPO has distributed thousands of international, topographic maps. Still useful for basic and historical research, these maps have remained difficult for people to access. Hand-made indexes, and even library catalogs, have proven inadequate to fully-utilize these valuable resources. Thanks to the rapid-changing world of GIS and the Internet, it is now much easier to create an interactive map.

Using ArcGIS and arcgis.com, participants will learn how to create a basic index to a paper map set (a set of maps that follows a regular gridded pattern). Instructions will include how to add and manipulate a “fishnet,” how to populate the index with appropriate information such as a sheet number and name, how to share a base map with other people, how to populate an index with a library’s holdings information, and lastly, how to upload the index with the library’s information to make an interactive (move around the map), dynamic (searchable) Web site with embedded links (to a library’s catalog or scanned copies of the maps).

Registration is required. Space is limited on a first-come, first-served basis. Upon registering, an e-mail confirmation of registration will include instructions for joining the Webinar.

Registration confirmations for the Webinar will be sent from [log in to unmask] To ensure delivery of registration confirmations, registrants should configure junk mail or spam filter(s) to permit messages from that email address.
