The University of Virginia Library seeks a Rare Book Project Cataloger for an 18-month term position to enhance access to portions of the Tracy W. McGregor Library of American History. Begun by philanthropist Tracy W. McGregor, the McGregor Library was given to the University of Virginia in 1938. Now numbering over 20,000 books, broadsides, prints, and manuscripts, ranging in date from 1475 to ca. 1900 and written in several Western European languages, the McGregor Library documents the European discovery and exploration of the New World, the settlement of North America, and the early history of the United States. Reporting to the Rare Book Cataloger, the Rare Book Project Cataloger will enhance bibliographic and copy-specific metadata to national standards for approximately 1,800 of the most significant printed works in the McGregor Library; report holdings to the English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC) and other bibliographical databases as appropriate; and link enhanced metadata to the approximately 300 digital surrogates to be created during the project. 

 

Qualifications: Master’s degree in Library/Information Science or other relevant Master’s degree. Demonstrated experience with relevant metadata and encoding standards (MARC, RDA, DCRM(B)). Reading knowledge of at least one Western European language (Latin preferred). Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively to achieve objectives. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills. Preferred: prior experience cataloging pre-1800 European imprints. Prior experience editing bibliographic records in OCLC and/or SirsiDynix Symphony ILS. Prior experience creating and editing authority records per NACO standards.

 

Salary and Benefits: This is an 18-month term position. Annual salary of $38,000 with excellent benefits, including 22 days of vacation and TIAA/CREF and other retirement plans, and enhanced professional development funding for new Library staff.
