Hey Jeff,

This webpage is a great resource! The geolytics disks have become an issue in recent years...having to reinstall the disks on newer machines, newer platforms, etc. We had to move our map collection again and are now faced once more with finding a new home to install some of the disks. It’s good to know I can point people to your webpage instead.

Thanks!

-Greg

Subject: Re: Social Explorer vs. Geolytics

Hey Greg,

I no longer recommend Geolytics products, and instead steer patrons to Social Explorer, NHGIS, and other options listed on http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/data/cendata.html. As far as I can tell, these two options provide everything except for normalized longitudinal data, for which I recommend the geodatabase built by UNC of LTDB from Brown U. (linked from the aforementioned webpage).

A researcher last spring wanted to use the NCDB to build upon earlier research that used it, so I found an old 32bit laptop to install it on. That was the only time I've pulled out any geolytics cd's in the past year.
