The NCSU Libraries is seeking applicants for the position of Director of Visualization Services. The NCSU Libraries offers advanced visualization spaces, services, and technologies that support university research and teaching in all disciplines.

The Director of Visualization Services provides leadership in developing and advancing visualization services, collaborates with library colleagues in developing a visualization program, engaging research faculty, and creating tools and guides to enhance data visualization at NC State. Requires an ALA-accredited MLS, MIS, or equivalent advanced degree in a relevant field such as GIS; and at least one year of experience working in the area of information visualization, or comparable education and experience.

The Libraries offers a highly competitive salary in recognition of applicable education and experience for this position. Librarians have non-tenure track faculty status (without levels of rank).

Essential Job Duties

The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of Visualization Services in the Digital Library Initiatives (DLI) department. Recognizing the power of visualization to ask and answer novel questions, spark new insights, enable greater understanding, and communicate powerful ideas, the NCSU Libraries offers advanced visualization spaces, services, and technologies that support university research and teaching in all disciplines. Our state-of-the-art facilities and computing infrastructure invite scholars to engage with research data using advanced visualization software, to examine and compare high-resolution digital content, and to immerse themselves in simulations and virtual environments.

The Director of Visualization Services:
•Represents the Libraries in the visualization community and provides leadership in developing and advancing visualization services in concert with researcher needs and in collaboration with university partners.
•Collaborates with library colleagues in developing a visualization program, engaging research faculty, and creating tools and guides to enhance data visualization at NC State.
•Advises, consults, and provides technical support and training to students and faculty in the visualization of data and multimedia disciplinary content.
•Working in concert with library information technology staff, supports and collaborates with university researchers in using the Libraries’ state-of-the-art high-technology spaces and computing infrastructure and to address their visualization needs.
•Participates in planning for research computing infrastructure in existing visualization facilities and high-technology spaces.
•Participates in library planning, serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams

NCSU librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. Reports to the Head of Digital Library Initiatives.

Other Work/ResponsibilitiesMinimum Education/Experience

ALA-accredited MLS or MIS, or equivalent advanced degree

Departmental Required Skills

At least one year of experience working in the area of information visualization, or comparable education and experience. Experience with visualization tools. Ability to extract and work with data from a variety of sources (e.g.,XML, relational databases, APIs, and web services). Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and users in the provision of visualization services. Outstanding written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills. Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member and independently and to promote teamwork among colleagues. Evidence of ability for ongoing professional development and contribution.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Academic background in a discipline utilizing visualization. Experience with one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, R, Java, Processing, C, C++) and experience with visualization programming libraries. Experience supporting visualization in a research setting. Experience translating user needs into technology services. Familiarity with interactive gesture and touch technologies. Ability to work effectively with large data sets.
