Pam,

The scanned images will work very well for making prints.  What matters is the quality of the printer.  The best would be to use an actual photographic reproduction method.  We sometimes print 8” x 10” by uploading to the Walgreen’s website.  That’s not the best for contact prints, unless they are 7” x 9” originals.  Some photo places have digital printers large enough for contact prints.  A color laser printer can do a pretty good job; it certainly will do better than a B&W one.

The scans will work for stereo pairs too, provided the area is covered by two different photos.  You can’t use the same photo twice and achieve stereo results.

Are you looking at taking the print collection from the St. Louis County Land Office?

Subject: scanned ortho photos

Our library has been offered 9"x9" ortho photos of our county.  They have been scanned and are easily available.  What concerns me is that printing off the photos and trying to use these as stereo pairs will not work - or at least work as well as the photos.  Here's what the site says:

Please Note: Full resolution images can be quite large (~4Mb for 600 DPI images and ~13 mb for a 1200 DPI image) and may take several minutes to display over a slow network connection. To save a file directly to disk right-click on the link above and choose the "Save as..." or "Save Target As..." option.

Any thoughts on this?  Am I being unduly concerned?  I know there will be little use of this collection but I would hate to pass on it, if the scanned images really won't work well.
