Harvey,

There's been some articles written on this topic in the past, which I can share at least one with you momentarily. I also know that several of my colleagues have been through this tough procedure in the past 5-10 years, and David Bertuca at the Univ. of Buffalo is I believe in the midst of having to move his collection right now (or just finished). Because several individuals have had to do this I know there are many posts about this topic here on MAPS-L, so perhaps Angie can assist with that? Anyway, to start you off, an article to check into:

March, Gregory H. Using AutoCAD to Help Relocate a Map Collection: The University of Tennessee Libraries' Experience. Journal of Map & Geography Libraries Vol. 5, No. 2 (2009): 157-173.

Perhaps others can suggest readings in other journals such as the Association of Canadian Map Libraries and Archives' Bulletin and/or the Western Association of Map Libraries' Information Bulletin.

Subject: Moving a map library

Colleagues, I would appreciate advice on moving a map library.

We have about ~200 drawers in ~40 cabinets.

Do the drawers need to be emptied, and the drawers moved separate from the cases?

If so, I am in need of advice on how to move the maps.

I have some ideas, although tips from people who have done this will help. Thanks!
