Position Title (University Pay Plan Title) GIS Services Specialist - University Library Duties Provide support for GIS data-related coursework, research, and teaching. Assist researchers with geospatial needs including: locating and accessing data sets; helping users with geospatial analysis; using GIS software; employing cartographic principles to create maps; converting data to other formats. Provide patrons guidance on data management best practices. Provide public service to the university community via in-person consultation, chat, phone, and email. Plan, develop, and provide workshops and classes for finding, using, and creating GIS products. Maintain and build the University Library's access to spatial data, including openly accessible online datasets and commercial products. Ensure that GIS lab computer workstations, printers, and software are updated and in working order. Partner with appropriate departments to increase curation of spatial data. Under direction of the Specialized Collections Librarian, guide and develop the future of services and resources in the library GIS lab. Develop and maintain knowledge of trends in GIS data and library services. Coordinate marketing, outreach and public relations of the University Library's GIS services to the Texas State University community. Manage assigned special projects. Required Qualifications Knowledge of GIS and cartography principles; ability to use geospatial software; ability to identify patrons' data needs and appropriate resources to meet needs; knowledge of data management best practices; strong oral and written communication skills; ability to create, refine, manage, and assess GIS programs and services to support the Texas State University community; ability to instruct within a traditional classroom, online, or hybrid environments; master's degree or higher in Geographic Information Systems or comparable degree, such as Geography or Urban Planning, with a concentration in GIS, or master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated ability to conduct quantitative analysis to effectively provide GIS support; ability to identify appropriate materials and software, in various formats, to support the GIS lab and patron research; programming language such as Python or PHP.
