You have been invited to the event "Best Practices for Environmental Data Management"

Best Practices for Environmental Data Management

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory Distributed Active Archive Center (ORNL DAAC) assembles, distributes, and provides data services for a comprehensive archive of terrestrial biogeochemistry and ecological dynamics data to facilitate research, education, and decision-making in support of NASA's Earth Science. Among the 12 data centers of NASA Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS), the ORNL DAAC is unique in the wide variety of data resources it’s managing. Its data holdings range from site-level field measurements, regional-scale airborne observations, to continental and global scale satellite remote sensing and modeling data products.
To address the challenge of highly diverse data, the ORNL DAAC has been actively adopting community and international standards throughout its data management life-cycle and building best practices on preparing interoperable environmental data with increased usability, ready for visualization, and easier to manage and search, whose values can be preserved longer into the future.
In this webinar, we will introduce fundamental best practices on how to choose the best format for your data, how to better structure data within files, how to define variables and units, how to develop data documentation so that others can find, understand, and use your data easily. We will also showcase advanced best practices on how to properly specify spatial and temporal characteristics of your data in standard ways so your data are ready and easy to be visualized in both 2-D and 3-D viewers (e.g. Google Earth). Finally, we will introduce guidelines on preparing standard metadata records to enable seamless integration of geospatial data into popular data catalogs and geoportals (e.g. ESRI Geoportal and geodata.gov).
