Dear Chris,

I consulted with our American Indian Studies Librarian here at UCLA, and he found some information and a contact person who might be able to help you. Here is what he emailed me:

----------------------------------
Imre Sutton, now, sadly passed away, co-edited a three volume work :

Mapping native America : cartographic interactions between indigenous peoples, government and academia / Daniel G. Cole and Imre Sutton, editors.

I see that the other co-editor was Daniel G. Cole, who wrote an obituary for Imre Sutton that appeared in our journal, and a portion of it appears in the work above. From the above work I learn he has worked on maps for the Smithsonian's multivolume Handbook of North American Indians. Consulting our journal's internal database, it appears Cole is the GIS coordinator for the Smithsonian, and the contact information we have for him is as follows:

It seems to me that Daniel Cole may have information that might lead to the information being sought.

I hope this helps!

Subject: Indian Reservations for 1900-1990

Hi everyone:

I'm working with two of our librarians in Special Collections that are interested in finding shapefiles of Indian Reservations for the US from 1900-1990. A few years ago, I digitized reservation boundaries for Arizona from 1880-1990, but we're having a hard time finding the same information for the other states.

Does anyone have any ideas about where we could find it? We found reservation boundaries for 1778-1891 but nothing more recent.

Thanks

Chris
