Katy Callon, chair of the SLA Transportation Division, would like to point out a program that might be of interest at the SLA Annual Conference in Philadelphia on Monday, June 13, 2016.

You might also, if you haven’t already, let your division know about the GIS Data session that the Transportation Division & Government Information Division will be presenting at the conference. I’ve included the details below; I think it might be of interest to your group.

GIS Data Session, Monday, June 13, 8 – 9:30 AM

Sponsored by the Transportation Division, Co-Sponsored by the Government Information Division

GIS, Geographic Information System, is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of spatial or geographical data. This technology allows maps to be layered with other types of data.

For this session:

Grant Ervin, Deputy Geographic Information Officer, and Jennifer Johnson, Lead GIS Analyst, will be reviewing some of the innovative GIS projects that the City of Philadelphia has conducted.

Hannah Fischer, Senior Librarian with the Congressional Research Service, Library of Congress, will discuss:  how to recognize GIS data, how to find the growing number of government and non-government sources for it, and tips on how to build a repository of GIS data, like the one her team built using SharePoint.

The final presenter, Dr. Paulette Hasier, head librarian of the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA), will present how NGA librarians are addressing the challenge of providing access to non-textual and cartographic collections. By creating robust metadata records and exploring ways to provide links to GIS files, they are working to provide their customers with an enhanced user experience and easier discoverability.
