The ladders are much safer than the kick stools for getting in the top drawers.

I’ve been planning with 5 feet.

I am also one of the people with cases stacked 5 high, so we need to make sure there’s room for a ladder in there. And from experience we like to use ladders with 4 high cases as well.

All,

Thanks for the useful information. I’ve checked up on the printed sources that Linda and others recommended. No one discusses numbers (so far). The most relevant thing I’ve found comes from “Guide for a Small Map Collection” by Barbara Farrell and Aileen Desbarats which says “There must be enough free space in front of your cabinets to allow drawers to be pulled out a good distance, and to allow the user to consult the material in the drawers.” They do reference two other books, one we don’t have and the other is missing. I’ve pasted information on the books below in case anyone has them available.

I also recommend taking a look at Special Libraries Association. Geography and Map Division Committee on, Standards. 1987. "Standards for university map collections." Bulletin (Special Libraries Association. Geography & Map Division) no. 148: 2-12. It’s very general, somewhat dated, but still relevant. My flippant summary is “Map collections have unique space and staff requirements and need adequate space, staffing, and budgets.”

Let me know if you have further input.

Thanks!

Kathy

Subject: Width between Map Cases

Hello,
Many years ago, the SLA Geography & Map Division developed standards for University Map Collections. I think that they included information on aisle widths, but I could be wrong. The articles on the standards can be found at:

There were some space considerations raised in Leighton's book on planning libraries, but if I remember correctly, that was only for how much space was needed for staff areas, not aisle width.
