Thank you to Louise, for bringing all this to our attention and thereby helping to keep us current on map cataloging updates.

I just want to add that the addition of Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Cartographic) to Cataloger's Desktop is great because of its enhancement with live links to connect terms with definitions, editorial conventions with their explanations in the introduction, and references to the rules and supplementary resources they are citing.  Thanks to those who did the necessary work to support this!

Hello all cartographic catalogers!  Some current additions and changes to documentation.

For those of you who subscribe to Cataloger’s Desktop, they have added a new resource called “Cartographic Resources Manual.”  Although there is no title page, I assume this is the manual recently written by LC’s Geography & Maps Division catalogers.  The old, faithful, Map Cataloging Manual has been withdrawn from Cataloger’s Desktop.

Also fyi, a new release to the RDA Toolkit took place yesterday in which substantial changes appear in the section on Scale.  See this page http://rda-rsc.org/newrscdocs and select the 7August entry named RSC/Sec/4, which documents the changes to these sections and others:

3.19.8.3 (and following)  Recording digital representations of cartographic content

3.4.1.3   Recording extent – see Exceptions at the end of this section, which includes a list of terms.

3.4.2.2   Recording extent of a cartographic resource

3.11.1.3  Recording layout – the terms “back to back” and “both sides” have been merged into a larger list of terms.

3.6.1.3   Recording base materials – terms such as “plastic” have been consolidated into a single larger list of terms. See an exception for cartographic materials, following the list of terms in 3.6.1.3, which allows for use of a more specific term if it does not appear in the list.  Example:  silk, used as base material for a map.

3.9.1.3   Recording production methods.  A consolidated list includes terms such as “blueline process” and “blueprint process.”

7.25.1  Basic instructions on recording scale.  (PDF page beginning with page 67.) This section has been extensively revised.  It now applies to still images or three dimensional forms (7.25.2) and cartographic content (7.25.3-7.25.4).  It has been rearranged and lists of controlled vocabulary terms have been consolidated.  Also, there is now a separate section for “Scale designation” (7.25.6) which includes controlled vocabulary phrases to use when there is no designation of scale on the resource.

I don’t believe that these revisions should change our current practices, which are well documented in Cartographic Materials (AACR2) and the new “Cartographic Resources Manual.”  RDA allows for cataloging communities to develop their own best practices, which is what U.S. map catalogers have done over the years.

If I have missed or mis-stated anything, please jump in with your additions and changes!

Best,

Louise

·         FRBR-LRM: FRBR-Library Reference Model (IFLA)

Note: Cartographic Resources Manual replaces Map Cataloging Manual, which is withdrawn with this issue.

A major search enhancement was added earlier to this issue:

·         When you type your query into the searchbox, Desktop tries to anticipate what you want by typing ahead. For example, if you type “ser” into the searchbox, a dropdown box appears just below the searchbox with up to 8 suggested queries and 5 suggested Cataloger’s Desktop resource titles. Each suggested query or title highlights matches to what you’ve typed into the searchbox and can be selected by either left mouse-clicking or using the down arrow key and then clicking “enter.” This feature also takes advantage of Desktop’s fuzzy matching capabilities (e.g. “serr” will retrieve “serials”). The searches that this feature, called “Query suggestions”, retrieve come from logs of past Cataloger’s Desktop searches and are not identified by user.

VERY IMPORTANT: As a reminder, please clear your web browser's cache (memory) before logging into Cataloger's Desktop if you haven’t already done so since Tuesday evening.

As always we appreciate your feedback on our service to you. Please let us know if there is anything we can to improve Cataloger's Desktop.  Thank you for your continued support.
