(UTL) is seeking a Data Visualization Librarian to develop programs and services to support the emerging data visualization needs of students and faculty at the University of Toronto. About the University of Toronto Libraries The University of Toronto Libraries
(UTL) system is the largest academic library in Canada and is ranked third among peer institutions in North America, behind just Harvard and Yale. The system consists of 44 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough.
This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of 215 graduate programs, over 60 professional programs, and more than 700 undergraduate degree programs.
In addition to more than 12 million print volumes, the library system currently provides access to millions of electronic resources in various forms and over 29,554 linear metres of archival material. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year.
The Libraries’ data centre houses more than 200 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes. The Opportunity Reporting to the Head of the Map and Data Library, the Data Visualization Librarian will engage with users across the university and work collegially
within UTL to develop a strategic approach to this new area of library services, including conducting needs assessments to inform service, technical, and infrastructural requirements. Other responsibilities are as follows: 1. Supports students and faculty
with their data visualization research and practice via consultations, and through teaching and instruction. 2. In collaboration with other UTL librarians, develops and offers software instruction to support teaching, learning, and research at the University
of Toronto 2 3. Leads the writing and publishing of data visualization instructional tutorials, courses, and supplementary material 4. In collaboration with other UTL librarians, contributes to the broad range of data services that support academic researchers.
5. Collaborates with and contributes expertise to student and faculty data, statistical, and visualization projects in a range of disciplines 6. Develops and reports on assessment measures for services 7. Through various levels of engagement and partnerships,
integrates data visualization services with existing services at the Map and Data Library and UTL 8. Actively engages in conversations and forums around data visualization on a national and international basis Required Qualifications 1. ALA-accredited Master
of Library Science degree (or equivalent) 2. Experience using data visualization tools such as D3.js, Tableau, Mathematica, and R. 3. Proven understanding of best practices for creating effective visualizations 4. Experience using statistical and Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) software such as SAS, SPSS, R, ArcGIS, QGIS, etc. 5. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with common quantitative research methodologies and descriptive statistics, including data analysis tools & techniques 6. Experience with
data cleanup techniques and tools such as OpenRefine 7. Experience or knowledge of the academic research process 8. Experience or knowledge of principles of information literacy and how they can be applied in an academic setting 9. Demonstrated commitment
to the provision of high-quality public service 10. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills 11. Ability to work independently and effectively with technology in a fast-paced environment while managing competing priorities 12. Strong written and oral
communication skills and the ability to develop clear, concise and accurate technical documentation 13. Ability to work cooperatively and collegially at all levels in a culturally diverse and rapidly changing environment 3 Preferred Qualifications 1. One to
three years of relevant academic library experience 2. Experience with scripting and programming languages such as Python, and JavaScript 3. Experience with qualitative research methods and software such as NVivo 4. Familiarity with survey design 5. Teaching
and instruction experience 6. Knowledge of digital preservation and research data management best practices Salary and Terms of Appointment This is a continuing appointment position to be filled at the Librarian I or II level. Rank and salary will be commensurate
