Thanks for alerting us that another person has solved the Mercator problem.  The Daily Mail article shows the ignorance of the writer in addressing the Mercator Problem.  And, no mention is made of the work of 'Bucky' Fuller who 'solved' this problem decades before.

I appreciate the mathematics that went into playing with the globe.  It is interesting to see another creation of a globe-like object that can be unfolded in many ways to produce a flat map.

However, in the first map shown in the Daily Mail article, the distance from NZ to Antarctica is about as far as the distance from Antarctica to northern Alaska.  If this map is so accurate why is NZ the stopping-off place for flights to Antarctica?   I think there must be some gaps in this new map projection that were filled in for the newspaper presentation.

All these years we have been writing about equal-area projections and displaying them, but the public does not seem to pay attention.  But, why let reality get in the way of a good story?

Thanks to all of sharing this story.

  • Hajime Narukawa, a Japanese architect and artists, created what is deemed the most accurate world map
  • Narukawa used the method AuthaGraph projection to make the map, which divides it into 96 triangles
  • Then the triangles are transferred to a tetrahedron and unfolded into a complete rectangle formation
  • The map won the Grand Award of Japan at the Good Design Award contest
