James Niehues spoke at our WAML meeting in October 2001 in Portland, OR.  At the time Mr. Niehues was living in the Portland area.  Having him as a speaker was one of my biggest "gets" in WAML.  I believe it was the first (or one of the first) time he had ever spoken in public about his cartography.  Fascinating and beautiful stuff.
