April,

Appendix N of Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Cartographic) deals specifically with composite atlases; you can find the manual online at: http://rbms.info/files/dcrm/dcrmc/DCRMC.pdf.

As concerns DCRM rules in relation to RDA, I would recommend reviewing the following statement from the Bibliographic Standards Committee of the Rare Book and Manuscript Section of ACRL/ALA:

https://rbms.info/dcrm/rda/

(Note that the paragraph on Cartographic has not been revised since the publication of DCRM(C); you can use the BSR for DCRM(C), though.)

Regardless of whether or not your institution follows the PCC RDA BIBCO Standard Record (BSR) guidelines, you can follow the instructions as given in Appendix N of DCRM(C), coding your record RDA and DCRMC. As you will see in Appendix N, one option of describing a composite atlas is very similar to how Jan and his colleagues have done (cataloging the atlas as well as the maps within).

As far as how these bibliographic creations fit into the WEMI model, I don’t think anyone has come up with a sensible explanation; if someone has, I would like to hear from them.

Hope this helps.

Todd

Subject: Re: RDA cataloguing of an atlas factice

Dear April,

We have an atlas factise that we described as a ‘pamphlet volume’ (convolute), i.e. though they all have the same shelf-number the atlas as a whole is described with an artificial title [Atlas containing 58 maps of parts of the earth], and a local note: All maps have been described separately and can be requested under shelfnumber …”. All separate maps have been given a full description. See: http://opc4.kb.nl/DB=1/SET=3/TTL=1/CMD?ACT=SRCHA&IKT=53&SRT=YOP&TRM=250+A+3<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__opc4.kb.nl_DB-3D1_SET-3D3_TTL-3D1_CMD-3FACT-3DSRCHA-26IKT-3D53-26SRT-3DYOP-26TRM-3D250-26-2343-3BA-26-2343-3B3&d=CwMGaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=PsJsO7xSM-4yUJ6e5upgFzfAwxnJuyXbT-bHonXlovw&m=Jmwv9sgtfPdfeXCSFv1ecOvcxjMaO-MqQqG2QDdsqXE&s=8nrwlPGCT4YS_RJ6xnELg3FlNRh4QMzBGinyEVxWIxw&e=> (35 map and 1 atlas description)
One can also give abbreviated titles in a (large) note, but then there is less to search in the catalogue.

Following is the description of the atlas as far as I can convert our description (with translations) into MARC21:

Onderwerp: RDA cataloguing of an atlas factice

Hello everyone

Please can anyone on the list let me know if they've had any experience of cataloguing an atlas factice (also known as a composite atlas) according to RDA rules.

These are atlases which contain an unique grouping of usually printed maps which were selected by or for a particular customer. They are generally antiquarian in nature, or at least I don't think I've seen one made with modern maps. The atlas may or may not have a title page describing the nature of the selection or for or by whom it was made, and includes printed maps that would also have been available for purchase individually. Thus, the individual maps can each be described bibliographically, but the combination of maps bound in the atlas is also bibliographically unique.

I've checked the RDA Toolkit, Cartographic Materials and the LC Map Cataloging Manual with no success. And trying to figure out how this sort of work fits into the WEMI model of RDA is making my head hurt!

Many thanks for any help.

Regards

April
