Kathy is correct that the issue of copyright was one of the reasons that the US Government cited when the discussion of making digital versions available was discussed.  After Land Info acquired all available charts in 2010, we examined each one individually (nearly 3,000 charts, plus hundreds of insets) and determined that 9% of them bore foreign copyrights.  We produced metadata showing at the sheet level which ones are copyrighted, and which ones are not.  Numerous other fields were captured as well.  This metadata is offered with the data that we sell.

Subject: Re: Nautical charts online?

At one time NOAA served up digital versions of a good number of the International Nautical Charts produced by NGA/NIMA/DMA.  However, the data used to create many of the maps are subject to international copyright and license agreements.  Rather than untangle copyright issues for each map produced by another agency, NOAA took down the international charts.

At least that’s my understanding….

I haven’t found a site for charts outside the US as well.

Subject: Nautical charts online?

In contemplating the future of our collection of worldwide nautical charts, I’ve spoken to a few people who told me that the US-made nautical charts are online.  Upon investigating, I believe that means only the charts of the US waters, and I’d like to verify that.  For instance, I have in hand NIMA chart 61170, Porto do Ibo to Porto de Moçambique dated May 30, 1998.  I’m not finding that online anywhere.

Is there a resource I’m unaware of?
