Thanks so much, Paige and Louise! These ©2018 maps were published in either very late 2016 or early 2017, based on when we placed the order, and there are a number of them! I’ll infer the publication date in 264 _1 with an explanatory 500.

Sincerely,

Jordan

Hello Jordan,

In thinking about your situation I wonder if there is any indication of an earlier publication date buried in some small text anywhere on the map? Or some information that you can infer a publication date from, such as the title of  an events calendar that includes a date?

My guess is that there isn't anything else to grab onto as a supposed or inferred publication date other than the 2018 copyright date, which wouldn't make sense to use as you noted.

I have not checked in RDA Toolkit or other reference sources before responding to your note but it would make sense to me to guess at a 2017 publication date and then put that in square brackets and with a question mark in 264 1 $c.

Again, don't take the above suggestion as "rule bound" because I don't have time at the moment to research this question in detail, but for now its a guide...

Paige

Subject: Copyright date in the future: how to handle 264s?

Hi all,

I have a number of MapArt/Canadian Cartographics Corporation maps in hand, ordered at the very beginning of the year, that all read ©2018. I can and will put that in 264 _4. What are the rules for handling obviously impossible publications dates in 264 _1? This isn’t necessarily a map-specific cataloguing question, but it would be good to know!

Thanks,

Jordan
