Although these links may create the impression that Edinburgh University Geography Department has simply discarded its map collection, in practice, I know that those involved
were in close discussion with various other libraries several months ago to try to pass as much as possible on to these collections. These other institutions included Edinburgh University Library, Historic Environment Scotland, the Royal Scottish Geographical
Society, and the National Library of Scotland, all of whom were able to visit, review holdings, look for rare or unusual material, and subsequently take donations. The Edinburgh University Geography Department map collection was chiefly used for teaching,
but has not been used now for many years, and the space was required for other purposes. Those overseeing the process tried very hard to ensure that significant or potentially unique maps found good homes before this disposal described below.

Here is the link to the post by the people selling the maps. The maps were diverted from the landfill and are being sold at 2 pounds per map. There are 25,000 maps dating back to the 1850's.
