Exciting is right! Our entire map collection was just moved and we’ve installed locking bars just as Gwen Curtis mentioned.

While I worked hard to organize our collections into the new configuration, that effort exposed the messy fact that we have at least 4 different size cabinets. Devil in the details! Besides all of the problems associated with that, in some cases we had to purchase single case locking bars when cabinets didn’t line up.

If anyone is in the area, do let me know and I’ll show you our new Gov/Geographic Collection space.

Subject: Locking map cabinets

Hi all,

We are in the rare (and exciting!) position of being able to purchase new locking map cabinets to house our “rare” maps. I’m wondering if anyone can speak to how well their locking cabinets have held up, and which brand you have. I’ve been looking at the Mayline ones, but does anyone have other suggestions? We haven’t purchased map cabinets in probably 50 years, and the listserv archives don’t seem to have much on this topic after 2000, so maybe no one else has either!

Any advice is very welcome!

Thanks,

Theresa
