Cataloging Assistant
Under supervision of the Cartographic Metadata Librarian at the David Rumsey Map Center,
the Cataloging Assistant will aid in the cataloging of maps and atlases, both new acquisitions and currently
held materials.
The Cartographic Metadata Librarian will train the Assistant in utilizing Stanford Library systems, such as WorkFlows, Argo, and JIRA for the cataloging of maps
on paper, digitized maps, and the tracking of project management. In addition, the Assistant will learn how to implement the Resource Description and Access (RDA) and
Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Cartographic) standards, as well as Stanford’s own best practices for map metadata. The Assistant will participate in structuring
and performing Quality Assurance on metadata for collections. As needed, the Assistant will track statistics and create time-in-motion studies in order to provide time
and labor estimates for future projects.
Applicants must have a background in cataloging and/or metadata creation at least at the coursework level. Preference
will be given to those with an MLIS degree or those currently enrolled in an MLIS program. Attention to detail, enthusiasm for cartographic resources and the stewardship
of special collections are all required. Must be able to effectively and efficiently juggle multiple projects simultaneously. Amicable
interpersonal traits highly desired for working amongst a small staff in a shared office.
