Dear All,
Some of you may have already seen the news about the release of DM 1.0, a resource for creating workspaces, collaborations, projects & open access scholarly publications for digital collections of images & texts (information here: https://digitalmappa.org/)
In conjunction with this release, we are also announcing the publication of Virtual Mappa (http://sims.digitalmappa.org/workspace/#965fe731) - an open-access scholarly project that's all about medieval maps.

Virtual Mappa

Martin Foys, Heather Wacha, Catherine Crossley, Asa Mittman, LauraLee Brott (so far)
Virtual Mappa is a project in partnership with the British Library that so far has virtually collected and fully annotated a cohort of eleven early English maps of the world, including the Anglo-Saxon Cotton Map and the massive Hereford Map (1100 inscriptions!). Significantly, by editing within the DM environment, all of this content is now searchable across all maps included. With the completion of this first phase, more maps will be gradually added, as new contributors publish maps within the resource. For an earlier summary of the scope of the project, see this British Library announcement. Virtual Mappa is hosted and published by the Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies.

Though the Hereford Map was edited and annotated as part of the Virtual Mappa project, above, in gratitude to the Hereford Cathedral and Library for providing their high resolution scans of the map to use for free, we also made them a standalone version of just the Hereford Map, completely annotated and linked.

The only technical requirement is that they be accessed via a Chrome or Firefox desktop/laptop web browser. If you feel you need help figuring out how to explore the DM environment, a full help guide may be found here: https://digitalmappa.org/guides/viewing-a-project/
And if you think this project may be of interest to others you know, please do send its information along!
Sincerely,
~ The Digital Mappa Team
