This position plans, develops, and delivers cartographic and government information and related services across the university and to the public. 

 

The UGA Libraries is Georgia’s designated regional depository for U.S. documents received through the Federal Depository Library Program and the official depository for State of Georgia government publications; it is also home to one of the largest academic map collections in the country. Taken together, the map and government documents collections consist of approximately 1.7 million tangible items housed in four locations (the Map and Government Information Library, the Science Library, the Special Collections Libraries Building, and the off-site Repository) and over 3 million microforms.

Job Summary

The University of Georgia Libraries is seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of Head of the Map and Government Information Library and Map and Federal Regional Depository Librarian. The Head of the Map and Government Information Library reports to the Deputy University Librarian and Director of Library Technology and has responsibility for the reference services, GIS services, technical processing, facilities, and staff of the Map and Government Information Library. This position plans, develops, and delivers cartographic and government information and related services across the university and to the public.

The Head of the Map and Government Information Library is responsible for selecting for and managing the cartographic and government information (Federal, State of Georgia, British, Canadian, and United Nations) collections, overseeing original and copy cataloging of cartographic materials and government information in all formats, overseeing the receipt and processing of government information in all formats received through the Federal Depository Library Program and elsewhere, participating in the management of MARCIVErecord loads for federal documents for the University System of Georgia, participating in research consultations, developing electronic access to and resources for cartographic materials, geospatial data, and government information, and participating in Libraries-wide activities. The incumbent supervises three full-time librarians and three full-time staff members and assesses policies and programs to maintain awareness on issues pertinent to specific subject areas.

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST HAVE:

• Knowledge of the Federal Depository Library Program and its legal requirements and standards.
• Knowledge of traditional and electronic cartographic resources and government information.
• Knowledge of applicable computer systems and software applications in use in libraries.
• Strong public services orientation.
• Ability to work with a diverse group of users and staff.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to initiate and maintain productive, long-term, effective working relationships with Federal Depository Library coordinators in Georgia, other regional Federal Depository Library coordinators, GPO staff, and the teaching faculty as well as patrons, university administrators, and community members.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and priorities efficiently.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises the reference services, GIS services, technical processing, facilities, and staff of the Map and Government Information Library by establishing, reviewing, and updating policies and procedures, and by overseeing and assigning work to staff members and student assistants.

Selects for and manages the cartographic and government information collections by assessing the current collection and program needs and performing and supervising preservation and curation activities.

Oversees workflows related to the receipt, processing, and description of cartographic materials and government documents in all formats.

Participates in the management of MARCIVE record loads for federal documents for the University System of Georgia, including providing training, generating reports, moderating USGFDL-L, and troubleshooting.

Serves as a consultant to the twenty-two selective Federal Depository Libraries in Georgia by answering inquiries concerning the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s (GPO) policies, procedures, requirements, and regulations, coordinating the processing of disposal lists, moderating DOCSGA-L, and by communicating with the GPO about depository activities in the state.

Plans for the continuing innovation of the Federal Depository Library Program’s services and programs in Georgia by participating in Depository Library Council meetings and conferences and serving as the permanent executive secretary of the Government Information Interest Group of the Georgia Library Association.

Coordinates the development and maintenance of the Map and Government Information Library’s online presence, including access to online cartographic resources, geospatial data, and government information.

Serves as liaison to University faculty by encouraging communication and responding to queries and concerns about the Libraries’ cartographic and government information collections; provides specialized reference service for government information by providing consultation services for students, researchers, selective Federal Depository Librarians in Georgia, and the general public.

Engages in professional development activities by representing Georgia’s Federal Depository Libraries at national and regional meetings, maintaining awareness of trends in the cartographic and government information communities by monitoring appropriate publications and listservs, and communicating relevant information to the Libraries’ administration and/or Georgia selective depositories.

Participates in general Libraries administration by serving on the Department Heads Group (DHG) and other appropriate committees as assigned or elected, by participating in the development and evaluation of policies and services, assessing user needs and satisfaction.

Facilitates collaboration and communication within the Map and Government Information Library and the Libraries as a whole by encouraging and actively engaging in the exchange of information.

Maintains awareness and acts upon changes and needs in the organization by assuming similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

ALA-accredited MLIS or Georgia Board of Regents-approved MLIS.
• Five years professional library experience in an academic library.
• Two years supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of issues pertaining to state government information; 
• Knowledge of GIS services in a library environment; 
• Knowledge of digitization best practices and standards.
