Hi Angie,

Yes, we immediately noticed this sudden, and negative, change about 10 days ago. One of my team mates wrote to Klokan Technologies and got a reply indicating that the change was precipitated by a financial arrangement with Google. I wrote to LC G&M catalogers via [log in to unmask] and got a reply that they were not aware of this change because they continue the practice of only supplying coordinates if available on the map itself, therefore they have not been using the tool like so many of us have.

On my end we are adapting to the less-than-ideal search mechanism as best we can. But, it is truly frustrating in several ways. This morning I tried to do a search on the state of Arkansas and only got a list of names with "Ark" in the name. Other times I get what I need but, for example when searching on the name of city in the United States one always gets a long list of possible matches, and then visually it is really difficult to read the letters on the list due to a portion of it being in gray. We also first check the box in the lower right corner to return only bounding box coordinates and yet it seems that if your place is very small geographically (such as Pearl, Mississippi) you only get point coordinates. I could go on with related issues but suffice it to say that this change has made doing this work miserable -- but not miserable enough that we would give up on supplying coordinates for every map we describe that lacks them!

Thanks for taking the time to organize the survey, which I just filled out, and seeing what we can do to get things back to the way they were!

Paige

Subject: Bounding Box - 2018

Have you noticed a change when using the Kloken Technologies Bounding Box app (http://boundingbox.klokantech.com/<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fboundingbox.klokantech.com%2F&data=02%7C01%7Cpga2%40psu.edu%7Cffe4cf1d4600447bf51908d61fe98f4e%7C7cf48d453ddb4389a9c1c115526eb52e%7C0%7C0%7C636731485333201457&sdata=QJsFKOXWo2SVw%2BhtfgPyJpL7vjGv6R5kNljfEtG%2F3Sk%3D&reserved=0>)? I emailed Kloken Technologies and was told that a recent update added some features (a select and polygon tool) but reduced the search feature.

Kloken Tech said, "There was a change of Google API that affected Bounding Box ... but there are no plans to restore or improve the search feature."

But, if we (the users) are interested in restoring the search feature, we can purchase 20 support hours and Kloken Tech would prioritize this task.

I'm curious if anyone else is interested in a) using Bounding Box and b) chipping in some money.

I've created a survey to get a general idea of who is interested. This is not a committment and you are not asked to include your name or any personal information.

Please complete this survey that should take less than a minute:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KMV3VFS

Other comments or suggestions are appreciated to me or the list.

I love Bounding Box, use it daily and hope we can rally together to save it!

Thanks everyone.
