The position will provide leadership in the organization, use, and management of the Library’s state and federal government documents collection as well as in promoting user awareness of and access to government information at the University of Montana (UM).

About the Position

Reporting to the Head of the Information and Research Services Division, the Government Information Librarian provides leadership and coordination for the access, use, and awareness of state and federal government documents collections and services, including the Mansfield Library’s Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP). Responsibilities of the position include training and advisory communications with the 11 Montana Selective Depositories, responding to inquiries and requirements from the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO), and communicating with other Regionals around the country. The Government Information Librarian is responsible for FDLP outreach, public access, support services, collection development, and serves as the primary liaison to the GPO in matters related to the Library’s service as a Regional Depository Library. The Government Information Librarian consults and collaborates with scholars, participates in a dynamic instructional program, provides reference and information services for the University’s students and faculty as well as members of the community. Some evening and weekend instruction and/or reference duty is required. University of Montana faculty members contribute to faculty governance activities within the Library and the University, engage in community and professional service, and pursue an active scholarly agenda including publication and research.

 

Primary Functions of the Position

  • Maintains government document depository arrangements as mandated by state and federal laws and regulations
  • Provides outreach to and coordination of federal and state document collections in Montana libraries through service to selective depository libraries in the state in the form of training, state planning, and guidance on depository management issues
  • Builds and maintains collections of state, federal and international documents in a variety of formats to meet the needs of the University of Montana community
  • Builds, maintains and manages the library's general map collections, including those produced by the federal government as well as other non-governmental publishers
  • Contributes to regional and national cooperative efforts in the promotion and use of government information
  • Participates in the Library’s information literacy and general instruction program, face-to- face and online
  • Provides general and specialized reference, research and information services for the University’s students and faculty as well as members of the community at the reference desk and through various information and communication technologies. May include some evening and weekend hours
  • Works collaboratively with subject librarians, Archives and Special Collections, Bibliographic Management Services, Digital Initiatives, Technology and Systems Services and others to develop and support activities relating to government information
  • Develops and maintains physical and online learning objects and research guides
  • Subject liaison duties may be required in support of information literacy and collection development for an academic discipline.
  • Active engagement in research and service in accordance with the unit standards for the Mansfield Library

 

Required Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited MLS in library or information science by time of appointment (or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Federal Depository Library Program, including regulations, guidelines and practices for depository libraries.
  • Experience working with or completed coursework in government documents (using both traditional/print and electronic government information resources).
  • Knowledge of current trends in public services and government information services in academic libraries.
  • Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, presentation, organization, and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in use of current technologies as they relate to library services.
  • Demonstrated ability to work individually and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to user-focused services.
  • Ability to respond effectively to changing needs and institutional priorities.
  • Ability to meet standards for achieving tenure and promotion as a library faculty member.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and advocate for an environment of diversity and inclusion.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with faculty, staff, students, administrators and/or the general public in a government information setting.
  • Experience or coursework in collection management.
  • Experience or coursework in reference and instruction.
  • Experience in developing working partnerships with academic departments and other units across library and campus communities.
  • Conversant with emerging issues related to teaching, instructional design, learning technologies, and information literacy standards for higher education.

 

Minimum Salary: Starting at $48,000, depending on qualifications and experience. Desired Start
