Hi, Geospatial Women,

Please see the notice below about an opportunity to attend a workshop for women in geospatial academic fields with travel paid for by the NSF.  Please note that they are specifically looking for librarians and information professionals.

Best,

Julie

Subject: 2019 TRELIS Workshop Announcement

Dear Julie:
Happy New Year!  Could you forward this announcement to your networks as appropriate.  We would like to have participation from the library and information science community - especially if there are geospatial librarians (either on faculty or staff) at universities who may be interested in this program.   Thanks again.  People can contact Diana Sinton (email is in the body) if there are questions.

2019 WORKSHOP

First Call for Participation

The University of Maine in partnership with a consortium of universities, private partners, and the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS) invite women in the academic sectors of the geospatial sciences ( including GIScience, remote sensing, spatial analysis, and mapping sciences) to apply to participate in the 2019 TRELIS Workshop.

TRELIS stands for Training and Retaining Leaders ISTEM - Geospatial Sciences. Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), TRELIS will develop leadership skills, career retention strategies, mentoring training, work-life balance considerations, and practical knowledge that can be passed onto future generations of women entering academic careers in geospatial sciences.

Who Should Apply?

Are you in your first academic job in the geospatial sciences at a college or university?  Are you pre-tenure?  Are you anxious about the promotion and tenure process? Do you have questions that are not specifically about work, or about work-life balance, but you are not sure who to ask? Do you sometimes wonder if you made the right choice for yourself?  Do you feel stuck even though you are just starting out and everyone tells you that you have it made? Are you interested in having mentors outside of your home college or university?  If you answered YES to a few of these questions, then this workshop is for you.

This workshop is tailored towards the issues frequently raised by early career scholars. However, if you have a question about whether this workshop is right for you and whether you should apply, please write to: Dr. Diana Sinton ([log in to unmask]) or Dr. Kate Beard ([log in to unmask]) immediately.

The University Consortium for Geographic Information Science Annual Symposium will take place in DC immediately following the TRELIS workshop, starting Tuesday, June 11th and ending Thursday, June 13th, 2019. We expect that the TRELIS workshop participants will attend the UCGIS symposium and their meeting registration and accommodation costs (double occupancy) will be covered.

Workshop Content

A series of hands-on, participatory and experiential activities, combined with panel presentations to address topics under the following themes – communication and language, mentoring and coaching, addressing obstacles and conflicts, finding work-life balance, and developing individualized career trajectories. The workshop is designed for participants to develop confidence around these issues, experience a shared sense of belonging within this professional community, and engage within a mentoring framework that models what has been proven to be an effective STEM strategy, namely, women leading women.

What Happens After the Workshop?

Workshop participants become TRELIS Fellows and will continue their geospatial professional development by also being part of the subsequent UCGIS Symposium from Tuesday June 11 to Thursday June 13, 2019. TRELIS Fellows are also eligible to receive mini-grants to promote TRELIS-related activities on their own campuses.
