The Map Section is part of the Bodleian’s Special Collections Department, based in Oxford’s Weston Library with holdings of around 1.5 million maps, 20,000 atlases, and numerous cartographic datasets, making it one of the World’s ten largest map collections. We are advertising for the exciting post of Deputy Map Librarian and Geo-Spatial Data Specialist.

You will work as part of the Bodleian Maps team, and with staff and students across the University and beyond, focusing on reader services and user education for Maps, Cartography and Geographical Information Systems. You will lead and develop digital mapping provision within the Bodleian Libraries and the University of Oxford, maintain and develop the Bodleian Library Map Room website and Twitter account, and deputise for the Map Librarian whenever required.

You will have a first degree in a relevant subject, proven GIS experience in previous employment, experience of the creation and management of web pages, and excellent time-management skills.

The principal aspects of the post are three-fold: to lead and develop digital mapping provision within the Bodleian Libraries and the University of Oxford; to maintain and develop the Bodleian Library Map Room website and Twitter account; and to deputise for the Map Librarian whenever required. Responsibilities Deputising for the Map Librarian You will lead the team when the Map Librarian is not present, and represent the Map Room within Oxford, and both at national and international events when required · Representing the Library at conferences and seminars, and attending training courses in GIS and related disciplines as required Page 4 of 8 · Collaborating with other members of the cartographic community on GIS-related projects · Collaborating with relevant Library staff (within and beyond Oxford) Digital mapping support for the University of Oxford You will teach GIS across the University · Teaching GIS, including ArcGIS, and other digital mapping software, often in conjunction with the School of Geography · Liaising with academic and research staff and students · Involvement in the assessment of student knowledge and development of research skills · Providing on-demand demonstrations of ArcGIS and other related applications · Providing specialist advice, instruction and technical support to readers in the use of the digital mapping and data analysis software applications available via the Map Room, and advising on suitable data, layout design, etc. · Organising and maintaining appropriate ‘spaces’ for consultations · Evaluating new digital mapping software and selecting software on the basis of quality and value for money · Specifying new hardware for the Map Room as required · Designing and delivering training courses · Writing and revising guides and user manuals for new software applications · Writing material for publication Management of the Maps website and Twitter feed You will maintain and develop the Maps website · Updating of GIS tuition manuals and providing free software downloads of material required by those accessing digital mapping · Ensuring all areas of the website are fully operational at all times · Soliciting and developing content from the Maps team and other Library staff · Promoting use of web-based resources across the University, briefing Library staff regularly on new developments · Delivering the Map Room’s social media output And any other duties that may be required from time to time commensurate with the grade of the job.
