This is the third year we’ve done GIS Day programming out of the Library here at CU Boulder.
The first year, we started small and just had a panel of local GIS professionals talk to students about a variety of GIS topics, with some snacks. We started planning kind
of late.
Last year, we scaled up and had a 2 hour session of short, 15-20 minute talks followed by a keynote speaker. These were well attended, but our OSM mapathon afterward fell a
little flat. Planning began in the spring.
This year, the plan is to have a keynote, short talks, (maybe a workshop, TBD), and some general networking/social time in between. Snacks/hors d'oeuvres/beverages intermittently.
We usually try to pull our keynotes from the local GIS community. Carto last year… Grand Canyon Trust this year. Getting local firms involved has been good to get students
there who are thinking about their careers post graduation.
Getting word out to anyone who is interested in not just GIS, but maps in general, is really key. Leverage any promotional staff the library have, as well as campus listservs
of all types. We have a group of GIS enthusiasts in History—so I mean everywhere. Then, pray that people show up!
I would say in our third year we’re still working to get it off the ground (we’ve tried different venues each year), and are still figuring it out as we go. But it’s been really
great still. Haven’t figured out how to get a helicopter or a plane on campus to promote the event yet—as some on this list have ;-).

Hi Tony (and everyone),
I’m not sure if you have the Esri Scholarship, but having students present their work for the scholarship is something we did at Brock University (St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada), while I was there. It was essentially a public presentation,
with a panel of judges to later award the scholarship (or, advance the best one for Esri to award the scholarship). We also worked with the campus Geography society to have pizza and drinks, and the library contributed a GIS-themed cake. We also had some trivia,
using Esri “swag” and other giveaways from on-campus partners like the bookstore as prizes.

Hello all,
GIS day is rapidly approaching, can we have some ideas shared on how we will plan for that day.
I plan on having an open house for a few hours, but I need ideas on what I can do.
This might be difficult for my library, as our library currently does not support a GIS program (because we are so small).
