Good morning -

I'm pleased to announce that the Missouri Geological Survey will host DMT'20!  The meeting venue will be the Missouri University of Science and Technology's campus in Rolla.  The meeting will be May 17-20, 2020.  As in recent years, in conjunction with the DMT meeting, we're planning for a one-day (May 17) workshop on GeMS implementation.

The MGS is excited to host DMT'20, and I really hope you'll attend.  In the coming months, we'll send you more detailed information about the meeting, and will let you know when the meeting’s website becomes available.  But in the meantime, please mark your calendars!

Regarding the meeting agenda, it'll strongly resemble that of previous meetings (please see the DMT website, https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Info/dmt/, in particular the section on Proceedings and presentations of DMT'97 - '19).  As always, we'll focus on the professional needs and interests of geologists, cartographers, and data managers.  Regarding the meeting agenda, your guidance and suggestions are essential to the meeting's success.  After receiving your guidance, later this Fall we'll send you the draft DMT'20 agenda.   Here are some proposed agenda topics:

(1) Preparing geologic maps:
-  Methods and technologies for digital field systems
-  Integrating field data with the project and/or corporate database
-  Availability of base maps and LiDAR
-  A reinvigorated emphasis on GIS, cartographic, and publication methods (if you're a shy presenter, please consider a poster or lightning talk)
-  GeMS (NCGMP's standard data schema) -- implementation strategies, status of multi-year plan for GeMS compliance.

(2) Compiling and managing your corporate GIS database:
-  Repository only, or also served to the public via interactive web site?
-  Quality-control and workflows.

(3) Dissemination and use -- new and proven methods for effectively providing geologic data for the general public.

It's always pleasing to see many new faces at each year's DMT meeting -- although we miss the familiar faces, we recognize that old friends and acquaintances do move on.  And so, speaking to potential first-time attendees, here's what DMT is about:

The Digital Mapping Techniques workshop series ("DMT") brings together scientists, cartographers, and GIS specialists, from State and Federal agencies, as well as Universities, the private sector, and international colleagues.  The objective is to foster informal discussion and exchange of technical information and expertise, and to develop more efficient methods for the many aspects of creating, managing, and serving digital geoscience map information.  The value of the DMT workshops is in helping to design or refine your agency's approaches to digital mapping, and to identify applicable approaches used by other agencies.

We hope to see you in Rolla, next May!
