I am forwarding the following announcement as a director of Imago Mundi Ltd., on the editor’s behalf.

The Editor of Imago Mundi, the international journal of the history of cartography, is seeking a map historian with the appropriate editing skills to take responsibility for articles dealing with maps made and used since c.1750. Imago Mundi is the only international journal published in English that covers the full chronological and spatial range of mapmaking and map use. Its articles are peer reviewed to a high standard, and other features of the journal (bibliographies of recent literature, book reviews, thesis abstracts) ensure that it is a journal of first resort for researchers in map history. Imago Mundi publishes eight to ten full length (normally 5–6000 words) articles and four to six shorter articles (2–3000 words) per year in two issues. Of these, usually a quarter (two to four, very occasionally more) cover subjects in the modern period, which will be the responsibility of the new academic editor. This position offers an opportunity for a candidate to broaden his/her professional horizons and to participate in bringing new and important research to a worldwide community.

The successful candidate will perform the following duties:

work closely with the Editor in the referee and selection process;
work with the Picture Editor concerning illustrations (suitability, range);
work with the Production/Copy Editor to prepare the edited text for press;
be wholly responsible for the structure, relevance and presentation of the argument and the quality of English syntax and idiom of the article.
The essential requirements for the academic editor include:

a personal interest in maps and map-making in the period (c.1750–c.2000);
an awareness of the current trends and intellectual parameters in the history of maps in general, particularly as these connect with other disciplines;
a readiness and ability to make or suggest changes to the text to ensure the author achieves the full potential of his/her article;
a demonstrable ability to maintain high standards of content, argument and expression;
previous experience in academic publishing, either through his/her own published work or through demonstrable editing experience;
a native or near-native command of the English language
an ability in one or more foreign languages (European and/or Asian) is a definite asset.

The modern period editor will be listed as a member of the Editorial Board. The appointment carries with it an honorarium of £300 per article.

To express and interest in this position and for further information, please contact:
The Editor, Dr Catherine Delano-Smith ([log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>), by 1 July 2020.
