JOB SUMMARY

Supports initiatives within the Map & Imagery Library that leverage its unique collections, expertise, and role within the University of Florida (UF) to connect with the UF community and strategic partnerships with external intuitions (such as in the Maps of Cuba for Public Access project and shared regional depository initiatives). Is the sole staff person in the Map & Imagery Library that oversees evening and weekend hours and student assistants working at that time. Manages and optimizes collection growth and preservation to support current and future learning, and research and knowledge creation for the Map & Imagery Library monographs and historical map collections. Promotes access to online library resources by streamlining and enhancing discoverability. Oversees physical processing and creates metadata for cartographic materials. Anticipates and effectively responds to needs of students and researchers using Map & Imagery Library collections. Trains and supervises students working on special projects. As a part of the SASC Public Services team, may provide information, circulation, and research assistance across all SASC service points. Collaborates with the SASC Public Services team to develop and implement best practices and procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Collection Organization and Maintenance (Historical Map Collections and Monograph Collections)

    Manages all book and atlas collections (Circulation Collection, CARTA Collections, and Oversized Atlas Collections), including stack maintenance and physical processing.
    Maintains inventory and organization of Historical Map Collections (Antique Map Collection, Florida History Map Collection, and Sanborn Map Collection) including tracking of maps used in displays and exhibitions at UF Libraries and other institutions, and maintaining the online Historical Map guide.
    Promotes and communicates the diversity and value of library collections through exhibits, in collaboration with the Map Librarian.
    Identifies materials needing preservation attention. Sends and tracks materials sent to Preservation Unit for binding, repair, encapsulation, etc.
    Works with the Digital Assets Manager to provide patrons with requested digital images of Map & Imagery Library materials.
    Communicates with Digital Support Services (DSS) regarding Historical Map Collection digitization needs.
    Oversees physical processing of cartographic materials (purchases, transfers, and gifts) for all Map & Imagery Library collections. Checks in materials on invoices, and maintains appropriate files and acquisition statistics.
    Provides information on possible new acquisitions and withdrawals for the Map Librarian. Checks acquisitions lists against the library catalog and physical collection.

Metadata Management

    Oversees University of Florida Digital Collections (UFDC) metadata needs for online map collections, including rights management.
    Identifies UFDC access issues and works, in consultation with DSS, to streamline and enhance discoverability of library digital resources.
    Serves as the primary liaison to the Cataloging and Discovery Services Department.
    Maintains tracking and information about antique maps for use in antique map cataloging by Cataloging and Discovery Services Department.
    Troubleshoots Aleph informational issues.
    Assists student assistants and other staff with cataloging-related questions.
    Works with staff in other units or departments to resolve more complex cataloging problems.
    Searches WorldCat/OCLC via Connexion using a variety of keyword and numeric identifiers. Matches map in hand to bibliographic record and evaluates the accuracy and completeness of the existing access points. Updates OCLC holdings and exports it from Connexion to Aleph.
    Provides basic copy cataloging for monographs and cartographic materials.
    Provides original bibliographic records (w/ review) for cartographic materials in Connexion. Provides subject analysis appropriate to content. Upgrades records in OCLC to a higher encoding level. Contributes BIBCO level records as part of the national Program for Cooperative Cataloging. Understands MARC format and AACR2 and RDA cataloging rules for cartographic materials.
    Creates full call numbers by inspection of item or subject analysis. Has a detailed understanding of LC call number subject heading correlation. Adds call numbers to a Connexion record and replace the master record in OCLC.
    Updates item and holding records in Aleph for maps, monographs, and serials.

Information, Circulation, and Research Assistance

    Works with the SASC Public Services team to develop best practices and procedures and to provide information, circulation, and research assistance across all SASC service points (Map & Imagery Library, Grand Reading Room, and the Latin American & Caribbean Collection) when assigned.
   Provides interactive and responsive support to patrons by phone, e-mail, and in person regarding use of the library catalog and other finding aids to find monographs, cartographic materials, and geospatial data.
    Provides assistance on the use and interpretation of cartographic materials in a variety of formats. Provides basic GIS technology support. Refers patrons to subject specialists as needed.
    Delivers user-centered instruction and provides learning opportunities when Map Librarian is unavailable.
    Offers specialized/expert assistance to patrons using the Historical Map Collections (Antique Map Collection, Florida History Map Collection, and Sanborn Map Collection)
    Assists in the use of UFDC map-related resources as well as other internet resources for geospatial information.
    Assists patrons with directional questions and in using computer workstations, scanner, and photocopier.
    Performs circulation activities such as checking in and out maps and books.  Activates Gator1 cards.  Answers general questions regarding circulation policies or refers patron to circulation specialist.
    Communicates effectively and interacts pleasantly with library users and staff.
    Ability to work with patrons and employees of diverse backgrounds and academic interests.

Evening and Weekend Facility Supervisor

    Oversees evening and weekend open hours and student assistants working at that time as the sole staff member in the Map & Imagery Library.
    Supervises students working on special projects as needed.
    Opens and closes the Map and Imagery Library.
    Staffs the reference/circulation desks during regularly assigned hours and as needed.
    Understands and implements policies relating to building and emergency procedures.

Transformative Collaboration

    Supports initiatives within the Map & Imagery Library that leverage its unique competencies, expertise, and role within the University to connect with the UF community and external partners.
    Develops standardized processes and documentation to onboard new partners.
    Manages digital assets of partner institutions within UF digital platforms.
    Oversees the addition of geographic coordinates to partner institution digital assets.
    Communicates with partner institutions as needed.

Other Duties

    Serves on committees as assigned.
    Attends library training and staff development workshops.
    Assists staff with special projects and other related activities.
    Provides input on outgoing grants, documents, publications, and webpages

Expected Salary:

Minimum annual salary at $36,169. Actual rate will reflect experience and credentials
Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree and two years of related library experience; or a master's degree and one year of related library experience; or any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
Preferred Qualifications:

    Experience providing reference services or experience working in a public services or sales position.
    Knowledge of World geography and cartographic subject terminology.
    Knowledge of research methods, preferably using maps and/ or aerial photos.
    Ability to use maps and/ or aerial photography.
    Experience or knowledge of cataloging procedures and tools in an on-line catalog environment.
    Knowledge of Library of Congress "G" classification scheme.
    Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with faculty, staff and students.
    Basic oral and written proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese.
    Basic computer skills and experience with Microsoft Word and Outlook.
    Ability to retrieve items from map cases/ shelves weighing over 25 lbs.
    Ability to work independently with little supervision.
    Skillful in organization, prioritization, and working with details.
    Ability to work collaboratively to accomplish goals.
    Ability to work harmoniously with the public and fellow employees.
    Flexibility, and ability to adapt and work in a rapidly changing academic environment.
