Thank you for following up on this.  My colleague at UCLA, Iman Dagher, catalogs materials in Arabic, so is very familiar with all kinds of title access issues.  She suggested the use of the 242 for a title translation supplied by the cataloging agency.  And this is exactly what I need for materials at the So Cal Genealogical Society Library for German-language books!  Most of our patrons read English or Spanish and a little bit of German, so this will help them identify a potentially useful title!

So, my original reply was incorrect because as specified above one uses the 246 in cases of a parallel title being present on the resource and that is not what you were trying to capture and deliver.

Thank you all for your replies, both off- and online. But (!) I'm curious why some of you suggested the 246, others the 242, but nobody said either/or. Is this a "cataloger's discretion" decision?

When a map is rendered entirely in non-Roman script, is there a legit mechanism in the cataloging process to turn the title as it appears on the map (e.g., "Крим") to a translated equivalent that does not appear on the map ("Crimea")? Can the 246 field be used for this?

I'm thinking this would facilitate searching by title, and also allow me to label maps with more reader-friendly info. The transliteration ("Krym") is better than the original Cyrillic ("Крим"), but "Crimea" would be even better for both purposes. 

Would that be kosher?
