Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Library Technician 3 position for the OSU Libraries & Press department  at Oregon State University (OSU).

The Library Technician 3 (LT3) position performs copy, complex, and original cataloging of continuing resources, electronic resources, maps, and monographs for all Resource Description and Access (RDA) media types collected by OSU Libraries and Press (OSULP) using advanced knowledge of library and information procedures, services, and resources. This includes resources in English as well as other languages. The LT3 performs specialized technical and administrative duties, which require a high level of non-routine decision-making, judgment, and independence, advanced/specialized technical and public service expertise, and a library-wide perspective of procedures and services. The position may also assign Library of Congress call numbers, Library of Congress subject headings, and perform authority record work.

  • This LT3 position catalogs all types of continuing resources, maps, and monographs requiring complex editing. The work involves the maintenance of previously cataloged records in both the local catalog and OCLC’s WorldCat database, resolution of cataloging problems, and performance of some original cataloging that will be reviewed by the cataloging librarian. This position functions independently and is responsible for interpreting, applying, and maintaining currency with all local and national cataloging rules and guidelines.
  • Is responsible for cataloging electronic resources issued alone or in series and sets, either by searching online catalogs and lists or by receiving notifications when new titles are published. These resources include e-books published by commercial vendors.
  • Assists with project work such as integrated library system (ILS) cleanup, withdrawals, and creating authority records.
  • Requires the ability to work with details, learn a variety of complex routines, and assimilate knowledge into an understanding of how OSULP functions in order to solve problems and improve procedures so that one may organize and carry out operations independently.
  • The person in this position applies a variety of information from specialized standards, guidelines, tools, databases, and various other sources. This position is responsible for new, adaptive, and retrospective cataloging in various bibliographic formats, with emphasis on continuing resources, electronic resources, maps, and monograph formats, in order to enhance discoverability and provide user access to collections.


Position Duties
30% Cataloging continuing resources: Performs copy cataloging and some original cataloging of continuing resources in all formats, including the assignment of Library of Congress call numbers and Library of Congress subject headings. The LT3 is expected to make decisions on each title independently using their own judgment and experience and perform all cataloging operations of an appropriate level. Catalogs current and retrospective materials.

Performs name and subject authority work as necessary. Requires thorough knowledge of OCLC, MARC, Ex Libris Alma, current cataloging rules, and CONSER continuing resource guidelines. Original cataloging is revised by the cataloging librarian. Work may entail cataloging materials in multiple languages.

30% Electronic resources cataloging and maintenance: The LT3 is responsible for cataloging electronic resources issued alone or in series and sets and keeping them up-to-date in the ILS. Performs cataloging on e-books, streaming videos, and Kindle e-books and downloads and processes monthly batch loads of electronic resources. Additional resources include OSU Extension and Oregon Sea Grant publications as well as e-books published by commercial vendors. The cataloger makes resources available in a timely manner.

30% Maps and monograph cataloging and maintenance: Performs cataloging of print maps and monographs on an as needed basis. Resolves complex problems, upgrades OCLC and local records, original cataloging, re-catalogs, and reclassifies monographs and maps from all sources. This includes searching for copy in WorldCat, ensuring the record is accurate and contains subject headings and a call number, downloading to Alma, and attaching holdings and item records. The LT3 assists Acquisitions staff with cataloging shelf-ready and gift books by upgrading minimal level records to full level as needed. Unusual or atypical materials may be referred to the cataloging librarian for assistance.

10% Other duties as needed or assigned: Assists with catalog maintenance projects, including development and coordination of special cataloging and other projects. Keeps current with changes that develop in the OCLC and Alma systems, national cataloging rules, and PCC policies and rules. Maintains current procedures by updating the procedures, participates in various library committees, and devises new routines and procedures in conjunction with others. Supports the work of student employees in the unit.

Departmental Expectations: As a member of the OSU Valley Library and the Resource Acquisitions and Sharing Department (RAS), time will be spent in unit, departmental, and library wide meetings, contributing to discussions and decision-making, and working on special projects, task forces, and committees as assigned or in discussion with your supervisor. Staff must demonstrate professional behavior and model good work habits at all times (i.e., avoid personal phones calls while on duty, stay on task, sign and date all written communication, etc.). Maintain individual work calendar, honor appointments, respond courteously and accurately to emails, phone messages, and other communications within a reasonable time frame. May provide backup for other staff during their absences.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree plus two years of current (within 5 years) experience in a Library; OR 4 years of current library experience. AND Advanced proficiency in multiple library specific computer applications, e.g., integrated library systems, database applications, institutional repository; content management systems. Some positions may also require in-depth knowledge of specialty area(s), e.g., original cataloging, complex copy cataloging, serials management, ILL management, government documents, image resources, music.

Additional Required Qualifications
  • Experience with copy cataloging in a variety of formats using OCLC Connexion and/or Worldshare Record Manager
  • Requires ability to work in a flexible and changing environment; including adapting to changes in responsibilities and duties.
  • A strong customer service orientation is required.

  • Familiarity with an academic library environment

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
This is an onsite position. It is in a fragrance-free office/library environment with exposure to fluorescent lighting. This includes work with damaged materials that may include, but are not limited to dust, dirt, and on occasion, mold and pests. The work is occasionally physically demanding with periods of standing, reaching, lifting, carrying, and pushing/pulling loaded book carts. Much of the work schedule involves working at a computer workstation. The work schedule is Monday to Friday, 8AM – 5PM
