Adelaide Hasse, a woman with deep Milwaukee and California roots.

Among Adelaide's many achievements SuDocs stands out, of course.

And also her title as "Champion Fast Lady Bicycle Rider of Los Angeles."

In many ways her career is emblematic of something new--confident women
professionals rising into roles where they were able to shine and
change the profession. But they were also running into walls. And how that
happened is worth remembering as well.

Beck, C. (2006). *The new woman as librarian: The career of Adelaide Hasse*.
Lanham, MD: Scarecrow Press, Inc.

Hasse's Wikipedia page reads like a detective story. It nicely summarizes
how she ran afoul of the Wilsonian World War I bureaucracy, solely because
her German-American ethnicity raised unfounded suspicions.

That helped her male supervisors at NYPL to terminate Hasse's professional
career. They also alleged she was a lesbian.

To this day the FBI refuses to release her file.
