I’ve encountered so many weird issues with GNS that I’ve come to assume that they’re doing a lot of public beta testing with rolling updates.

I had one staff member who couldn’t get the search interface to pop up because he had configured his monitors in portrait mode and GNS didn’t like a resolution where it was taller than it was wide. It tends to break if I zoom in with my browser to make the text larger and it’s unpredictable from workstation to workstation, which makes it difficult to plan staff training sessions. I’ve also found that if I do too many elaborate searches, something seems to go off and then I need to refresh the browser before I’ll see results again.

It’s not the most intuitive interface and I hate that the fuzzy search behaves differently than the standard search and that there are a lot of hidden features, but at least they have a decent user manual if you click on the question mark on the upper right tool bar.

Best,

Ronda

My problem was that I couldn’t connect to it at all, but they got back to me very quickly to suggest that I change my browser’s default language to US English (it was UK English before). This has fixed the problem so that I can access it. So that’s a start!

Thanks to everyone who has shared tips.

You can also click on the "zoom to" box and click on the dot on the map, and get the information that way.

I had some success going here: https://geonames.nga.mil/geonames/GeographicNamesSearch/.  I typed in my search term of Belfast. Then I clicked on the box labeled "fuzzy search," in the upper right. It returned a long list of Belfast places along with checkboxes for filtering by country.  I selected UK and got a smaller list.  But that did not tell me any information.  So, I checked the box for City of Belfast and clicked the magnifying glass to zoom to it on the map. Next I closed out that fuzzy search results window so I could see the map. Then I clicked on the dot on the map and it gave me the name information.  This is really bizarre behavior, in my humble opinion.

I have the same problem as Debbie Hall.
Your link gave a 503 gateway error.
Now I just tried it again and it does go to the map.

This is the website I use instead:

Yeah, no https, but my website doesn't have https either.

Is anyone else struggling to search for official US geographic names for foreign places? I keep getting spun in circles, I get to the web app but it won't load or I get an "unresponsive" message following a search. Does anyone have a link that works? Is it possible to load the app without the map? I only need summaries - official and variant place names.

Help!

Here's one of the many links that sends me into a vortex ...
