We made a local decision to use the 655 field, and then not use that field in other ways. It appeared to me that that 655 for genre was most often used for things that just don't apply to us, such as various genres of literature. We just don't have that, and when I'm copy cataloging, it can happen, but it seems rare to find a 655 tag for the kind of materials that we have. So, we sacrificed the usual use of that field, in order to have a field we could use strictly for local subject headings. Because our collection specializes in Ohio geology, we have many items that will all have kind of the same words, and so, being able to zero in using subject headings is important. One of the things I made local subject headings for was coal designations - we have thousands of maps showing coal in Ohio. I wanted a little more to describe them than "Coal - Ohio". In our system it is possible for a 655 field to be hyperlinked, and you could click on it and round up more stuff. But it was not possible for a 653 to be hyperlinked. We're not part of a consortium, and so, things in our local catalog are not going to show up in a union catalog any place else. If I ever needed to, I could do some maneuvers to strip out all 655 fields, or change it to a 653. I thought it was good to keep our local subject headings segregated in that way, to leave some room to back out of this if that need ever came. I don't know what the future holds, and it's always good to have options. We're a very specialized collection - only Ohio geology - and so, there are cases where Library of Congress just doesn't have a subject heading that we need. Hello Krina, No, I do not use the free-floating term "Region" accompanying a name for any place smaller than a city. I think H790 is pretty clear on that "the city and its surrounding territory". A neighborhood by definition is a smaller portion of a city or town, even if the boundaries of the neighborhood are geographically large. As for neighborhoods and lack of subject headings for them, there isn't a lot one can do about that except combine a topical term for a neighborhood (I am not yet at work and so do not have access to NAF to look up if "neighborhood" is a LCSH subject heading, sorry). Alternately, look at the MARC 653 field because it is flexible enough to allow a cataloger to use the name of a neighborhood. LC defines, in: Areas Associated with Cities [city] Region: the city itself and its surrounding territory, the exact size and boundaries of which are indefinite and may vary according to each individual work being cataloged. (LCSH manual chapter H790) My reason was, that sometimes the area around a neighborhood was (and is) hard to define, not built up and does not have a specific name to use for a subject heading. My superiors are of the opinion that a neighborhood cannot have the word 'region' attached to it in subject headings, and want to take the word region out.
