The University of Chicago Library is recruiting a GIS Librarian to provide reference, consultation, and instruction to support the use of geospatial data and tools across academic disciplines at the University of Chicago. Based in the Center for Digital Scholarship, and reporting to the Director of Digital Scholarship, they will lead the Library's GIS program and work closely with colleagues to provide an array of geospatial data and research support services. The incumbent may be the instructor of record for two credit-bearing courses per year depending on their skills and curricular need. Course topics are chosen based on the librarian's expertise and in collaboration with the Director for Digital Scholarship and the Center for Spatial Data Science. Potential course topics may include spatial visualization, web GIS, or spatial information science. This position manages the GIS Hub, a lab for geospatial research and instruction, and assists users with acquiring, manipulating, querying, and visualizing geospatial data. The GIS Librarian leads planning and implementation of GIS-oriented professional development in the library and partner with subject librarians to understand practices of researchers in various fields relating to geospatial data creation, use, and preservation. The GIS Librarian works collaboratively with Library staff and with other campus experts, such as the Research Computing Center, to improve access to geospatial resources and to plan for the preservation of geospatial assets. They will also collaborate with the Maps Curator to represent the Library on the Big Ten Academic Alliance Geospatial Information Network. Responsibilities: * Provide reference, consultation, and instruction to support the use of geospatial data and tools * May instruct two credit-bearing courses in GIS each year on topics such as spatial visualization, web GIS, or spatial information science * Manage the GIS Hub, including student employees and Library Fellows * Develop campus and consortial partnerships to support GIS use on campus and increase access to spatial data and infrastructure * Engage in original scholarship and contribute to professional and scholarly associations Qualifications Minimum Requirements: * ALA accredited MLS or MLIS degree or an advanced subject degree in an appropriate discipline * Undergraduate or demonstrated equivalent subject experience in geospatial information science, geography, or another related field * Demonstrated experience with geospatial data, GIS software applications, and data management practices Preferred Experience or Skills: * Advanced degree or coursework in a geospatial information science, geography, or another related field * 1 or more years of library experience * Deep expertise in one or more aspects of geospatial information science * Familiarity with one or more of the following: computer programming languages, statistical software, qualitative analysis software, metadata standards, or web GIS. * Experience in the creation, deployment, and assessment of instructional programs * Experience supervising student employees * Experience in project management Application Instructions The Search Committee will evaluate a candidate's application in order to determine their ability to interact respectfully and effectively in oral and written communication with diverse constituencies, their ability to perform complex problem solving and decision making, ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate and implement projects, and their demonstrated commitment to professional development.
