Position Summary
The University at Buffalo Libraries seek an innovative, collaborative, and self-motivated individual to provide GIS (geographic information systems) and map collection research support to faculty, students, and researchers across the University. The GIS and Geospatial Librarian will be a service-oriented individual who will join the Science & Engineering Library Services (SELS) team.

As the GIS and Geospatial Librarian, primary duties include:
  • Leading the development of library programming and infrastructure for use of geospatial data and GIS in research and teaching.
  • Delivering instruction and training to individuals and groups from all areas in the University on topics relating to GIS and the Map Collection.
  • Building strong collaborative relationships with faculty in the Department of Geography and across the University, as needed, to foster the development of new services related to GIS and integrate library resources, information literacy and research competencies into courses, curricula, and programs.
  • Providing reference and research consultation services in-person at service desks, through individual appointments, and via electronic communication (chat, email, text) for students, faculty, staff, and outside researchers.
  • Overseeing the Libraries’ Map Collection, the largest map collection in Western New York with more than 450,000 maps, 6,000 aerial phots, and more than 500 atlases covering all regions of the world, with emphasis on Buffalo and Erie County, New York State, and the University at Buffalo.
  • Developing and managing resources related to GIS, Geography, and the Map Collection.
  • Demonstrating commitment to continued professional growth and active participation in professional activities and service.

This is a two-year, renewable faculty appointment with rank leading to tenure in an academic research-oriented environment with expectations for research, publication, and service. The GIS & Geospatial Librarian will report to the Head of the Science & Engineering Library Services Team and work with librarians and staff across the University Libraries to advance the University Libraries mission.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science, or equivalent, from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Knowledge of trends, issues, and tools related to GIS.
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education with the ability to support and enhance a diverse learning and working environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to prioritize projects, work independently, and collaborate with library and university colleagues.
  • Evidence of the ability to do research, publication, and service consistent with the University at Buffalo’s standards for tenure and promotion.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree, certificate or coursework in GIS, geography, or other relevant research-oriented discipline.
  • Knowledge of GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, and/or GRASS GIS) and/or related computational tools, and management of spatial data.
  • Experience working in an academic library, science library, special library, or with GIS or maps.
  • Experience providing instruction to a range of audiences, including faculty and students.
  • Experience with data management across the research lifecycle, including creating, processing, analyzing, preserving, accessing, and reusing research data, either from work experience or through academic coursework.
