I wonder if anyone has done something with the Australian Aboriginal
songlines. The songlines are sacred chants which could be characterized
irreverently as oral wayfinding maps. The songlines form a web over the
land, convering at nodes which are especially sacred. For a description
of songlines (and current social conditions among aboriginals) in the
popular literature see "Songlines" by Bruce Chatwin.
