The NMD produces, maintains, and provides a national series of base cartographic data. The Technical Instructions (TI) program has been established to assist in defining, maintaining, and publishing technical documentation in support of these activities. A major portion of the TI program is documentation of product standards and software, and the description of cartographic processes. A checklist of printed documents, available through the Earth Science Information Center (ESIC) network in printed form, lists an describes the documents. ESIC researchers may be reached at 1-800-USA-MAPS. Some NMD TI documents, including the checklist, are now available via File Transfer Protocol (FTP) on Internet. Additional documents will be added as they are published.
