----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Since several postings recently have dealt with requests for locating land cover data for the U.S., interested folks might want to know that the USGS offers 1-km resolution land cover data on CD-ROM for $32. This disc contains a prototype land cover characteristics data base for the conterminous United States (lower 48 states) derived from the classification of 1990 AVHRR time-series satellite data, with post- classification refinement based on other digital earth science data sets, including topography, climate, soils, and ecoregions. The Center for Advanced Land Management Information Technologies of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln was a major collaborator in this effort. The data files include (1) the source data, (2) the initial and the final interpretation of land cover regions, (3) descriptive and quantitative attributes for each of the land cover regions, and (4) derived thematic data sets. It contains the complete land cover characteristics data base and is intended to provide users with the flexibility to tailor data to the unique requirements of a variety of applications. The data base provides researchers with the capability to compute new parameters, derive new classifications and aggregations of the data to suit specific needs, and to develop custom products. The data on this CD-ROM also complements the 1989-92 AVHRR CD-ROM's and the AVHRR Companion Disc produced by the USGS. The "Conterminous U.S. Land Cover Characteristics Data Set" CD-ROM may be requested by calling the EROS Data Center at (605)594-6151, or telneting to the Global Land Information System (GLIS) online inquiry/order system on Internet at GLIS.CR.USGS.GOV (152.61.192.54).
